Choosing a Google Business Profile Category for an Independent Practice
Your primary Google Business Profile category should describe the practice patients will actually find at your location. A category is one part of a clear local presence, alongside accurate hours, contact details, services, and a useful website. Start with accuracy before trying to optimize for a phrase.
Start with the practice’s main service
Review the categories Google currently offers and choose the closest specific match for the practice as a whole. Do not add a category merely because you mention that service on one page. If your practice has several distinct services, use additional categories only where they accurately describe what the business provides. Check Google’s current guidance before changing a profile with departments or multiple practitioners.
Make the profile and website agree
Compare the chosen category with the practice name, public services, location, hours, phone number, and service pages. A patient should understand the same business from either place. If a page promises an appointment type the practice does not offer, correct the page. If the profile is missing a real service, update the profile and confirm that the website explains it clearly.
Check the patient’s next step
Open the public profile on a phone. Follow the website link to a relevant service page, then look for the contact or appointment-request path. Note unclear labels, stale information, and broken links. Ask a staff member to confirm the details before publishing changes, especially hours, locations, and scheduling instructions.
Measure with care
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence. Category accuracy supports relevance, but changing a category cannot guarantee a particular position. Record the category and the date of a change, then compare the same queries and locations over time. A single search from one phone is only an observation.
Real estate professionals and brokerages can use the same accuracy check for their own profiles. Solitude’s primary focus is independent medical and medical-adjacent practices.
Request a Practice Growth Review if you want a practical look at your public profile, website, and contact path.
